Cupra Australia has secured more stock of its plug-in hybrid range for local buyers. Arriving soon in local Cupra showrooms, the company has earned 450 examples of plug-in hybrid variants of both the Formentor SUV and Leon hatchback (badged VZe) for the Australian market. While exact numbers are yet to be revealed, the majority of the new PHEVs landing locally are of the popular Formentor, which has been the company’s best-selling car sold locally so far. Cupra’s plug-in hybrid pricing starts at $64,690 drive away for the Leon in the Australian Capital Territory.

Cupra Australia Director Ben Wilks said about one third of Cupra orders were for its battery cars.

“Cupra’s VZe models provide the best of both worlds – E-Mode using just the battery that can be restored from a conventional charger or good, old ‘hot hatch’ conventional performance with Hybrid,” he said.

“Those intent on making savings at the bowser can do the average daily commute on battery alone with reserves to spare.  Keen drivers quickly discover that our PHEVs switch seamlessly between its dual means of propulsion and together provide a formidable 180kW and 400Nm.”

Under the bonnet of the Cupra Leon and Formentor VZe plug-in hybrids is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that’s teamed with an electric motor for a combined output of 180kW of power and 400Nm of torque. The claimed 0-100km/h sprint time for the Leon VZe is 6.7 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds faster than the Formentor VZe.

Propulsion is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the electric motor draws power from a 12.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack for 67km of claimed electric driving range for the Leon and 58km for the Formentor. The Leon is rated at 1.8L/100km for claimed combined fuel consumption, while the Formentor is rated at 1.9L/100km.
