Electric power has officially taken the crown as Australia’s lowest-priced new vehicle. BYD has temporarily slashed the Atto 1 Essential to a national price of $19,990 drive-away until December 15, a milestone moment for the local automotive market that few predicted would arrive this decade.
This isn’t merely a breakthrough for zero-emissions transport; it stands as the single cheapest new vehicle available across any fuel type in Australia.

Australians have never had more choice when it comes to affordable electric vehicles (EVs) and BYD has just set the bar lower, shaving almost $4,000 off the price of its Atto 1 electric hatch to position it at an ICE-rivalling $19,990 driveaway.
BYD’s move is the latest salvo in an escalating price war between rival Chinese car makers including BYD, Geely, and MG and positions the Atto 1 Essential in clear air with its nearest rival being the Geely EX2 priced from $26,490 plus on-road costs.
This temporary repositioning pushes the Atto 1 comfortably beneath established light-car competitors.
What other cheap cars exist?
Kia’s Picanto Sport manual starts at $19,190 plus on-roads, with the automatic pushing to $20,790 and the GT-Line landing at $22,590. Once government charges are added, even the entry-level Picanto clears $22,000 drive-away in most states.
MG provided brief competition with its MG3 Vibe at $19,990 drive-away, but that offer closes on September 30—giving BYD’s campaign an additional two and a half months of clear air.
Under the skin, the mechanical package remains unchanged. The Atto 1 Essential features a front-mounted 65kW/175Nm electric motor fed by a 30kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade battery unit, delivering a claimed 220km WLTP driving range. DC fast-charging speeds top out at 65kW.

Standard features include a 7.0-inch digital instrument display, a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane-keep assist, a reversing camera, and rear parking sensors.
Selecting metallic paint adds $500, while the range-topping BYD Atto 1 Premium stays at its standard price of $27,990 plus on-road costs.

Australia remains one of the most open playing fields globally for Chinese automotive brands—free of tariffs, lacking local manufacturing barriers, and supported by buyers eager for tech-heavy value. Australian motorists now purchase more vehicles built in China than from any other country, including Japan.
The competitive pressure will only escalate. Geely’s EX2 Complete is slated to launch from $26,490 plus on-roads, while GAC is preparing an entry-level 44kWh variant of its Aion UT (promising around 320km WLTP range) before the end of the year.
To support its expansion, BYD continues to open new sales and service locations at a pace of roughly one per week, targeting over 150 retail sites nationwide by December.
For now, the most affordable ticket into a new car in Australia runs purely on electricity.
