Cupra Australia has announced a new special edition of its Formentor small SUV, with just 100 units of the 2023 Cupra Formentor Matrix Edition due for Australia. As the name suggests, the Cupra Formentor Matrix Edition adds matrix LED headlights with adaptive high beam functionality, but also black leather trim and new 19-inch alloy wheels. It’s priced from $70,490 drive away – only $1,500 more than the Formentor VZx on which it’s based.

The 2023 Cupra Formentor Matrix Edition adds matrix LED headlights with adaptive high beam functionality, as well as black leather upholstery with heated front seats and electric adjustment with memory for the driver and unique 19-inch alloy wheels.

That’s on top of the regular Formentor VZx’s standard equipment, which includes dusk- and rain-sensing automatic LED lighting, auto wipers, gloss black roof rails, keyless entry and start with a hands-free electric tailgate, heated and auto-folding mirrors, tri-zone climate control, four USB-C ports, a 12-inch touchscreen with wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation, digital radio, a wireless phone charger, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and a nine-speaker Beats sound system.

Safety equipment includes 10 airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assistance with lane trace assist, driver fatigue monitoring, safe exit assist, auto rear braking, auto parking, front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera. The Formentor earned a five-star ANCAP safety rating in 2021.

Options for the 2023 Cupra Formentor Matrix Edition include $475 ‘premium ‘Graphene Grey’ paint, $2,300 matte paint in either ‘Petrol Blue Matte’ or ‘Magnetic Tech Matte’ and a $2,100 sunroof.

Under the bonnet of the 2023 Cupra Formentor Matrix Edition is the same 228kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as the Formentor VZx on which it’s based. It’s mated to a wet clutch seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and sends power to all four wheels. Its claimed 0-100km/h sprint time is just 4.9 seconds, while combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.7L/100km.
