Cupra Australia has announced its Australian pricing ahead of first local deliveries in July 2022. Priced from $43,990 plus on-road costs for the entry-level Leon hatchback, $50,690 for the Formentor coupe SUV and $60,990 for the Ateca SUV, the Cupra range will come with three free years of servicing. Performance figures range from 140kW to 228kW, and for the first time since Audi introduced the A3 and Q7 e-tron in 2016, plug-in hybrid variants from the Volkswagen Group will be offered to Australians.

With orders set to commence from early June, 2022, Cupra Australia’s Head of Product and Planning,  Jeff Shafer, confirmed: “The desirability of our three-model, highly specified Cupra range is now matched by drive away pricing that offers great value plus a complimentary three-year servicing offer and a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty.”

“From $43,990 plus on-road costs through to a maximum $66,990 drive away, our trio of Leon hatchback, Formentor crossover and Ateca SUV offer exactly what modern Australians are looking for – all sharing key performance, technology and design DNA.”

2022 Cupra Leon

The 2022 Cupra Leon is the brand’s sporty hot hatchback offering and is based on the Seat Leon, which is Seat’s version of the Volkswagen Golf and won’t be sold locally. In Australia, it will be offered in three forms: the V, the VZ, the plug-in hybrid VZe and the VZx.

Standard kit on the Leon V ($43,990 plus on-road costs – drive away pricing is yet to be announced) includes 18-inch alloy wheels, all-LED lighting, auto lights and wipers, rear privacy glass, digital dials, a 10-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android auto, wireless phone charging, satellite navigation, tri-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, cloth sports seats, adaptive dampers and rear privacy glass. Metallic paint is included and buyers have the option of ‘Nevada White’, ‘Magnetic Tech’, ‘Midnight Black’, ‘Asphalt Blue’ and ‘Urban Silver’.

Safety equipment includes eight airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with travel assist, lane assist, auto parking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, auto rear braking, driver fatigue monitoring, emergency assist, a reversing camera and auto high beam.

A few options exist for the Leon V, including the $2,450 Leather and Sound Package, which adds leather seats with heated front seats, an electric driver’s seat with memory, copper stitching on the dashboard and a nine-speaker 350-watt Beats sound system. Also available is an $1,800 sunroof, while premium metallic paint (‘Desire Red’ or ‘Graphene Grey’) is $475.

Above the Leon V sits the Leon VZ, which is priced at $52,590 plus on-road costs ($56,990 drive away, nationwide). This adds a more potent 180kW/370Nm engine, as well as 19-inch wheels and the same options and trims are available for it.

Above the Leon VZ sits the Leon VZe ($59,990 plus on-road costs or between $62,990 and $65,990 drive away, depending on your location). The VZe is powered by a turbocharged petrol engine and electric motor drivetrain for 180kW/400Nm in total, uses a six-speed DSG (not a seven-speed DSG as in other Cupra drivetrains) and replaces the spare wheel with a repair kit.

Finally, the king of the range is the Leon VZx, which is priced at $60,990 plus on-road costs ($64,990 drive away). It ups the ante to 221kW/400Nm and adds black and copper wheels, a quad exhaust system, a sportier steering wheel and the contents of the Leather and Sound Package from lesser Cupra models. A Brembo brake package is available ($3,600), as is a sunroof ($1,800) and matte paint in ‘Petrol Blue’ or ‘Magnetic Tech’ ($2,300).

2022 Cupra Formentor

In the middle of the Cupra Australia range sits the Formentor coupe SUV, which is priced from $50,690 plus on-road costs ($54,990 drive away) for the entry-level Formentor V. The Formentor is the only Cupra in Australia that doesn’t have a Seat version – until the Born electric car arrives – and its spec largely mirrors the Leon, though it has all-wheel drive on the V, and more kit like a larger 12-inch touchscreen and aluminium mirror covers.

A $2,750 Leather and Power Package is available for all Formentor models under the VZx, and includes leather bucket seats with heated front seats, an electric driver’s seat with memory and a hands-free power tailgate. Premium metallic paint (‘Desire Red’, ‘Graphene Grey’ or ‘Dark Camouflage’) is $475, while a panoramic sunroof is $2,100.

The Formentor VZ ($53,790 plus on-road costs or $58,490 drive away) adds a 180kW/370Nm engine and 19-inch wheels, though it remains front-wheel drive like the Leon VZ.

The Formentor VZe ($60,990 plus on-road costs or $63,990-$66,990 drive away, depending on your location) uses the same 180kW/400Nm plug-in hybrid drivetrain as the Leon, with a six-speed DSG and a tyre repair kit instead of a spare wheel.

Finally, the top of the Formentor range is the VZx ($61,490 plus on-road costs or $66,490 drive away), which adds the 228kW/400Nm tune of the 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, all-wheel drive, a quad exhaust system, a sportier steering wheel and the contents of the Leather and Power Package. Optionally available are Brembo brakes ($4,150), matte paint (‘Petrol Blue’ or ‘Magnetic Tech’ ($2,300), a sunroof ($2,100) and premium metallic paint (‘Graphene Grey’ or ‘Dark Camouflage’) for $475.

2022 Cupra Ateca

Finally, the 2022 Cupra Ateca SUV will also launch in Australia and is available only in a single VZx grade priced at $60,990 plus on-road costs ($65,990 drive away). Basically a Cupra-badged version of the Seat Ateca – the Spanish version of the Skoda Karoq and Volkswagen Tiguan – Its standard equipment follows a fully-loaded Formentor VZx with slightly less power at 221kW/400Nm but still featuring all-wheel drive. It also features equipment like a 360-degree parking camera.

Only a handful of options exist for the Ateca, including a $5,950 Akrapovic exhaust, $4,050 Brembo brake package, $1,800 panoramic sunroof and ‘Dark Camouflage’ premium metallic paint.
