The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf has been on sale in Australia for seven years but it’s to be replaced by the new eighth generation model in 2021. Because of this, Volkswagen have made a send off for the MK7 Golf with the 2020 Volkswagen Golf R Final Edition.
Only 450 of the 2020 Volkswagen Golf R Final Editions will be available to purchase and of those 450, only 150 will be available in Volkswagen’s ‘colour concept’ custom colours never seen on Australian-spec Golfs. These colours come at a $300 premium and include ‘Victory Blue’, ‘Viper Green’ (previously seen on the Scirocco R) and ‘Violet Touch’.
All the other 300 2020 Volkswagen Golf R final editions will be painted in either ‘Pure White’, ‘Lapiz Blue’ or ‘Deep Black’. The only other option available on the R Final Edition is a $1,900 sunroof – though really, you’d think that would be standard on such a limited edition car.
Unfortunately, the Akrapovic exhaust from the 2019 Golf R Special Edition does not feature.
The Final Edition comes with the usual array of Golf R features such as the 213kW/380Nm 2.0 litre turbo four-cylinder engine with all-wheel drive. On top of this, the R Final Edition comes with 19-inch black ‘Pretoria’ wheels (these are very sought after in the Golf community), gloss black door mirrors, ‘Carbon Nappa’ leather upholstery and a Dynaudio audio system.
That’s on top of usual Golf R standard equipment, which includes a 213kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, LED lighting with adaptive high beam, privacy glass, heated front seats with an electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory functionality, dual-zone climate control, a 9.2-inch infotainment system with inbuilt satellite navigation and digital driver’s gauges, which Volkswagen calls ‘Active Info Display’.
The Golf R Final Edition is available to buy now from $57,990 plus on road costs – $2,500 more than the standard Golf R, which remains on sale.
