Ahead of a March 2024 entry into local showrooms, the 2024 Toyota HiLux range has been announced with revised frontal styling, new equipment for some variants and – for some variants again – the adoption of a new ‘V-Active’ 48-volt mild-hybrid system aimed at increasing fuel economy and drivability. Following similar upgrades to its Ford Ranger arch rival, this is likely the last update we’ll see for the current shape HiLux before its replacement arrives in showrooms likely in 2025.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the upgrades to the new-look HiLux range make it more compelling than ever.

“Introducing 48-Volt technology on double-cab HiLux models is an exciting step forward, improving fuel efficiency while still providing performance and capability that the HiLux is known for,” Mr Hanley said.

“Combined with dynamic styling and improved specification, the HiLux range has never looked more appealing.”

For some buyers, the biggest upgrade to the 2024 Toyota HiLux range is the addition of a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system that’s standard equipment on Rogue and SR5 4×4 dual-cab pick-up automatic variants and optional on the SR 4×4 dual-cab automatic as well. While Toyota Australia shies away from using the hybrid word because the system can’t power the vehicle by itself, it reports an increase in fuel economy by approximately 6-10 per cent, as well as engine smoothness. In the European-spec HiLux 48V, the system can add 12kW of power and 65Nm of torque, though our specs are yet to be confirmed.

The 48V HiLux uses a motor-generator unit, 48-volt battery and a converter to enable auto start-stop functionality when stopped to save fuel, and increase refinement, according to Toyota. 48V variants also use a new ‘Multi-Terrain Select’ system, with six off-road drive modes for enhanced performance. The 150kW/500Nm 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine is otherwise unchanged, and the 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol and 2.4-litre cylinder turbo-diesel engines used in other variants are unchanged too.

Elsewhere in the 2024 Toyota HiLux range are new frontal styling with new bumpers on Workmate, SR and SR5 (except petrol and single-cab chassis models), while the SR5 also receives new black exterior detailing on the upper grille, mirror caps, door handles, sports bar, tailgate handle and a dark silver and black rear bumper. Toyota also says that most Workmate variants gain a black honeycomb grille, while petrol and single-cab Workmate models add a new black front bumper and the SR gains a new silver lower front bumper finish.

All pick-up models receive gas struts and dampers for the tailgate to make it easier to use, while SR automatic pick-ups receive front and rear parking sensors as standard. The SR5, Rogue and GR Sport have also received a wireless phone charger and two USB-C ports in dual-cab variants. Finally, choosing the 48V drivetrain on SR models also gains keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, carpet flooring and auto up/down functionality for all windows.
