After a long teaser period, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R has finally been revealed ahead of an early 2023 Australian release. According to the brand, the new Civic Type R is the most powerful Type R ever made – though, strangely, performance figures are yet to be revealed – with Honda aiming for it to be the fastest front-engined, front-wheel drive vehicle on the market.

According to Honda, “Based on the Civic hatchback, which has been well received in the market, low & wide packaging was further pursued to elevate driving performance for the Type R model.”

Under the bonnet of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that was also used in the last Civic Type R. In that car, it made 228kW of power and 400Nm of torque, and while Honda is yet to announce performance figures, it will push out more than that. The only transmission available will be a six-speed manual with automatic rev-matching on downshifting.

While the exterior of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R has been toned down compared with the wild exterior of the previous generation model, it still offers some aggression thanks to its 19-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, Brembo brakes, pumped guards, a massive rear spoiler, the tri-exhaust system from the last Type R and a rear diffuser, while a mechanical limited-slip differential also features.

The interior of the Type R is bathed in red detailing, such as the upholstery, carpets and stitching. Aluminium centre console trim also features, while the 9.0-inch touchscreen from the regular Civic features Honda’s ‘LogR’ performance logging software and a configurable digital instrument cluster.

Available colours in Japan are ‘Sonic Grey’, ‘Crystal Black’, ‘Flame Red’, ‘Racing Blue’ and the traditional Type R ‘Championship White’. The sole interior colour is red.

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R will go on sale in Australia in early 2023, with local pricing and specifications to be announced before then. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
