Mitsubishi has just revealed its rival for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the Kia Niro PHEV: the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Now with more tech, a completely new look and a host of new safety features, the plug-in hybrid variant of the Outlander range is set to cause a stir in the mid sized SUV market. Due to launch in April 2022, the PHEV variant of the new Outlander range will arrive only a few months after the regular Outlander range.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Set to arrive locally in April 2022, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV uses the same ethos as the outgoing model – though transported to the new Outlander’s more modern, angular and arguably stylish body.

Mitsubishi is set to reveal the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV’s drivetrain details on October 28 but for now, here is a glimpse of what it will look like. The only sneak peak of information that we have so far is that both the front- and rear-mounted electric motors will be more powerful than the previous model and that the electric range will increase from the current car’s 55km. It is also confirmed that Mitsubishi’s S-AWC full-time four-wheel drive system will feature with seven (yes, seven!) different drive modes.

Visually there is very little changed from the regular petrol Outlander other than the dual-tone paint colouring, a second fuel cap for the electric charger and PHEV badging. Unlike the current shape of Outlander PHEV and its five-seat layout, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will feature seven seats – the petrol model’s 9.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will still feature, while the digital display in front of the driver will feature new driving mode screens to accomodate the PHEV-specific electric drivetrain.

Local pricing and full specifications are set to be revealed closer to the launch date in April 2022.
