At the same time as revealing an all-new Prado, Toyota Australia has taken the wraps off the upgraded 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series that will be offered with a four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission for the first time since the 1990s when it arrives in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2023. It also introduces new safety features, revised styling, as well as a new central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Toyota Australia President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the expanded range and substantial upgrades to the LandCruiser 70 Series demonstrated Toyota’s commitment to continuing to meet the needs of Australian customers.

“The LandCruiser 70 Series has built up a loyal and passionate fanbase with customers drawn to its rugged styling and legendary off-road performance and this substantially upgraded model builds upon those strengths,” Mr Hanley said.

“Now with a new powertrain including an automatic transmission for the first time, along with the significant increase in safety and convenience technology, the LC70 is an ideal vehicle for those working on the land or as a tool of trade and recreational users heading off on an outback adventure,” he said.

Under the bonnet of the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series is the same 151kW/430Nm 4.5-litre V8 turbo-diesel engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission as the current model, but new for this update is the same 150kW/500Nm 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission that features in the HiLux, Prado and Fortuner. It’s the first time that an automatic transmission has been offered in the 70 Series since the 1990s.

Buyers will be able to option the four-cylinder engine across the range, in all three single-cab variants – Workmate, GX and GXL – and the Workmate and GXL grades in the dual-cab, wagon and troop carrier. According to Toyota, the V8 will be culled from the Workmate wagon, but is still available throughout the rest of the range.

The rest of the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series update ushers in new frontal styling with new bold LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, a new bonnet, new bumpers and a new grille – the latter with the same ‘T O Y O T A’ script as new Prado and some variants of the LandCruiser 300 Series.

Inside, there’s a new 6.7-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for the first time, while the speedometer now has a new retro look and, for the first time again, a 4.2-inch digital display with a digital speedometer. There are also new USB-C ports and a new centre console incorporating the new automatic transmission.

Finally, the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series’ suite of active safety kit has expanded to offering lane departure warning, speed sign recognition and auto high beam. That’s in addition to auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection that was added in 2022.

The 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series update will arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2023, with local pricing and specifications to be confirmed before then. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
