After initially confirming it for Australia last year, Kia Australia has launched the 2024 Kia Sportage Hybrid with local deliveries due to commence soon. Priced from $45,950 plus on-road costs – or $8,400 more than the SX petrol 2WD auto – the Sportage Hybrid will only be offered in mid-spec SX and top-spec GT-Line variants for now. Rated at 4.9L/100km on the combined fuel consumption cycle, the Sportage Hybrid will add good volume for Kia Australia against the ever-popular RAV4 hybrid, as well as newer hybrid mid-size SUVs like the Honda CR-V.
“The Sportage range was already an excellent medium SUV package in a very popular and competitive segment, and the addition of a Hybrid variant strengthens our offering considerably,” said Kia Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Damien Meredith.
“The Sportage range is an integral part of Kia’s sales initiatives and we anticipate sales of the HEV to be around 300 per month, contributing 20% of total Sportage sales volume.
Under the bonnet of the 2024 Kia Sportage Hybrid is a 132kW/265Nm 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a six-speed automatic transmission mated to a 44kW/264Nm 1.49kWh lithium-ion polymer electric motor driving the front wheels. Peak outputs are 169kW of power and 350Nm of torque and the Sportage Hybrid is rated at 4.9L/100km on the combined fuel consumption cycle, making it comfortably the most efficient Sportage currently sold in Australia. Unlike the RAV4 hybrid but like the CR-V hybrid, the Sportage Hybrid is front-wheel drive only.
Compared to regular Sportage models, the hybrids gain 18-inch alloy wheels with space saver spare wheels for more efficiency – according to Kia – and in the Hybrid SX, a shift-by-wire transmission selector replaces the traditional gear knob in other SX models. The Hybrid GT-Line also features a heated steering wheel.
