Around six months after the regular petrol variants – and the hybrid in between – the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric has gone on sale in Australia. Priced from $54,000 plus on-road costs, the entry point to the Kona range is now $500 less expensive than the previous model despite a larger body, more tech and a larger battery for a longer driving range. The second-generation Kona Electric is due in local Hyundai showrooms soon.

“All-new Kona Electric underscores Hyundai’s technological ambition and commitment to developing sustainable mobility solutions, setting a new standard in battery electric small SUVs,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Ted Lee.

Using the same platform as the regular Kona but with batteries and motors instead of an engine, transmission and petrol tank, the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric will be offered with two lithium-ion battery sizes: a smaller 48.6kWh unit in the base model, or a larger 64.8kWh unit in the Extended Range models. With the Electric Extended Range, up to 505km of range is achievable with the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric. The onboard AC charger now has capacity of up to 10.4kW, up from the previous 7.2kW, and DC fast charging times have improved for the 10 to 80 per cent charge: 45 minutes for both battery sizes.

Choosing the smaller battery gets buyers a 99kW/255Nm electric motor that drives the front wheels, while the larger battery uses a more powerful 150kW/255Nm electric motor. The entry-level model offers a claimed 370km of driving range – up from 305km on the previous model – while the mid-spec Extended Range offers a claimed 505km of range which is reduced to 444km on the top-spec Premium.

Like the petrol and hybrid variants, the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric has grown appreciably compared with the previous model at 4,350mm long, 1,825mm wide, 1,585mm tall and with a 2,660mm long wheelbase. Compared with the previous model, it has 77mm more rear legroom, while the boot capacity has grown by 75-litres to a total of 407L with the seats up and 1,241L with them folded (+127L) – plus, all models also have a 27L front boot as well.

As before, the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric is covered by a five-year/unlimited km warranty with an eight-year/160,000km warranty for the battery. Servicing is required every 24 months or 30,000km, whichever comes first, and the first three services are capped at $520 each.
