Australian pricing and specifications for the 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport have finally been announced ahead of its arrival into Australian showrooms soon. Not too long after its global reveal in September, the Yaris Cross GR Sport adds sportier styling to the Australian Yaris Cross lineup and is available in a single spec based on the GXL hybrid 2WD. It’s priced from $35,840 plus on-road costs and competes with cars like the Ford Puma, Mazda CX-3 and Kia Stonic.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the Yaris Cross GR Sport embodies Toyota’s desire to launch exciting, driver-focused products in the market.
“It has been a big year for the GR brand with the launch of the all-new GR86 and manual GR Supra, and that momentum will continue in 2023 with the GR Corolla,” Mr Hanley said.
Like other GR Sport models in the Toyota range – such as the C-HR GR Sport – the 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport’s transformation focuses on sportier styling, though it also includes returned suspension for a sportier driving experience. As such, unique GR Sport touches to the Yaris Cross include 18-inch alloy wheels, red brake callipers, sportier exterior styling including a rear diffuser and black mirror caps, sports front seats with grey faux leather upholstery, aluminium pedals and, of course, GR badging.
For the front suspension, engineers lowered the ride height by 10mm, as well as enhancing the spring constant and rigidity of the lower control arm, while an exclusive bound stopper has been added for the first time to control body roll and improve ride comfort. Additional chassis improvements include the adoption of an underfloor brace and a second brace running along the lower rear of the vehicle connecting the cross members, further stiffening the underpinnings.
For now, a single drivetrain is available in the 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport: an unchanged 85kW 1.5-litre three-cylinder hybrid, which is mated to an e-CVT automatic transmission and sends its power solely to the front wheels. Its combined fuel consumption is rated at 3.8L/100km, with CO2 emissions of 86g/km. The e-AWD system available in the Yaris Cross range is unavailable on the GR Sport in Australia for now.
Based on the mid-spec GXL hybrid 2WD, standard equipment on the 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport includes automatic LED lighting, single-zone climate control, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation with live traffic, digital radio, a six-speaker sound system, keyless entry and start, heated and auto-folding mirrors, rear privacy glass, a 40:20:40-split rear seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Safety equipment includes eight airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian, cyclist and intersection assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist with lane trace assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, auto high beam, driver attention monitoring, road sign assist, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree parking camera and reverse auto braking.
