Volkswagen have revealed the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R Wagon adding to the 8th generation Golf range that has recently gone on sale in Australia. The fast wagon now adds more safety, more power and even more practicality to the Mk7.5 Golf R wagon, which was an excellent all-rounder. With a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.9-seconds, the Golf R wagon is no slouch and it’s due on sale locally in early 2022.
The Volkswagen Golf R Wagon comes with the same drivetrain as the hatch on which it is based. The same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine remains producing 235kW of power and 420Nm of torque driving all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch (DSG) transmission. As mentioned before, Volkswagen claims a 0-100km/h time of 4.9-seconds, which is only 0.2-seconds slower than the hatchback version, and a top speed of 250km/h.
Now one of the most important parts of the new Golf R Wagon is how much you can fit in the back of it. Volkswagen claim that the wagon comes with 611-litres of cargo space with the rear seats in place and a huge 1,642L with the rear sears folded down. With a weight gain of 79 kilograms over the hatch, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R Wagon isn’t as heavy as you may expect. Some tweaks have been made to the suspension to balance out the extra weight of the wagon.
The wagon variant of the Golf R is 349mm longer than the hatch, which goes to show why the boot is so much larger. The same blue accents that the Golf R hatch‘s interior has have carried through to the interior of the wagon. There is also ambient lighting, sports seats with faux carbon design and a flat bottomed steering wheel.
Volkswagen Australia has confirmed that the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R Wagon will be released locally in early 2022. Pricing is yet to be announced, though we expect it to be comfortably north of $60,000 plus on-road costs.
