Australian pricing and specs for the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon range have been announced ahead of the car’s local arrival in the fourth quarter of this year. Available for the first time in over a year, the Arteon relaunch in Australia coincides with the mid-life update for the car, which has included the usual styling and tech upgrades, but also a new Shooting Brake wagon variant and even a lower-priced 140TSI model.

Hitting the sub-$60k market for the first time, the Arteon 140TSI uses a 140kW/320Nm version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that’s used in a plethora of other Volkswagen Group products. It’s matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic as standard, and it’s front-wheel drive.

Above the 140TSI is the Arteon 206TSI, which uses a 206kW/350Nm version of the same engine, as well as the same seven-speed dual-clutch auto. Crucially, the 206TSI is all-wheel drive.

Measuring 4,866mm long, the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake is 4mm longer than its liftback sibling. Because of its sloping roofline, the boot is only two-litres larger than the liftback at 565L (measured to the window line) – though hardly small. Folding the rear seats opens up 1,632L of space – still huge, though less than the 1,780L Passat wagon on which it’s based, and less than the massive 1,950L of the Skoda Superb wagon.

Priced from $59,990 plus on-road costs (the Shooting Brake is $2,000 more), the entry level 2022 Volkswagen Arteon 140TSI includes 19-inch alloy wheels with adaptive dampers, LED exterior lighting, tri-zone climate control, Nappa leather upholstery, a 9.2-inch touchscreen with inbuilt navigation, a digital driver’s display, digital radio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an electric tailgate, ventilated and heated 12-way electrically adjustable front seats with driver’s massaging and memory functionality, a 700W Harmon Kardon sound system, keyless entry and start with auto-folding mirrors and interior ambient lighting with 30 available colour options.

Standard safety kit includes auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian monitoring, lane assist, emergency assist, adaptive cruise control, a heads-up display, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, auto parking, front and rear parking sensors, auto rear braking, driver fatigue monitoring, a 360-degree parking camera and Matrix functionality for the headlights.

The Arteon 206TSI R-Line then adds all-wheel drive, 20-inch wheels, sports seats with ‘Carbon Nappa’ upholstery, heated and 14-way electrically adjustable front seats with driver’s memory and massaging, an alarm and sportier exterior and interior styling.

Available colour options include ‘Kings Red’, ‘Pyrite Silver’, ‘Manganese Grey’, ‘Deep Black’, ‘Kingfisher Blue’ (140TSI), ‘Lapiz Blue’ (R-Line) and ‘Oryx White’ – only the latter attracts a charge of $800. A panoramic glass sunroof is also available on all models for $2,000.
