Barely six months on from its global reveal, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has gone on sale priced from $71,900 plus on-road costs. Sitting on the same ‘E-GMP’ platform as the Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60, the Ioniq 5 is the first car of the trio to go on sale in Australia. For now, Hyundai is importing a batch of 400 high-spec cars with the largest battery pack and most performance, though will offer other variants – perhaps lower spec cars, as in Europe – in 2022. 

“It is our great pleasure to introduce the futuristic IONIQ 5 battery-electric medium SUV, as the first model from our IONIQ EV sub-brand,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer Jun Heo said.

“The powerful, long-range, ultra-fast charging IONIQ 5 represents the leading edge in zero-emissions battery-electric vehicles and is certain to delight customers,” he said.

How big is the Hyundai Ioniq 5?

Measuring 4,635mm long, 1,605mm tall and 1,890mm wide with with a 3,000mm long wheelbase, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is just 5mm shorter, 60mm less tall, 25mm wider and with a 245mm-longer wheelbase than the new Hyundai Tucson mid-size SUV.

According to Hyundai UK, it weighs as much as 2,100kg (kerb weight). 

What powers the Hyundai Ioniq 5?

Underneath the Ioniq 5 is a 72.6kWh lithium-ion battery that can be charged in as little as 17 minutes through a 350kW ultra-fast DC charger – with a standard AC 10.5kW charger, it takes around six hours to charge. Up to 451km of range is offered with the rear-wheel drive Ioniq 5 – upgrade to the all-wheel drive car and you get a maximum of 430km (WLTP). 

Buyers of the rear-drive car get a 160kW/350Nm electric motor, while the upgrade to all-wheel drive adds a front motor for a 225kW/605Nm total output. The 0-100km/h sprint is completed in as little as 5.2 seconds in the AWD car, while the top speed for both models is 185km/h.

How do you buy a Hyundai Ioniq 5?

According to Hyundai, because of the Ioniq 5’s demand, the first 400 cars will be sold directly from Hyundai Australia to customers – dealers will not be involved. The company has had over 120 deposits paid, plus over 11,000 expressions of interest lodged, and the new direct-to-customer sales model aims to “provide a fair allocation of Ioniq 5 to customers across Australia based on demand.” 

There will be three steps to the Ioniq 5 buying process; 1) those customers who have placed deposits with dealerships will have first priority from September 27th, 2) from October 12, any customer who has previously registered their interest in the car will have 24 hours early access to place an order and 3) from October 13, ordering will open to the general public. All cars are secured with a $2,000 deposit. 

Is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 well equipped?

Very well equipped is the summary. Standard kit includes 20-inch alloy wheels, all-LED lighting, auto lights and wipers, ‘eco-processed’ leather upholstery, keyless entry and start with an electric tailgate, remote start and smart park assist, power door handles, a panoramic glass roof, 12-way electrically adjustable with memory, heated and ventilated front seats, two-way electrically adjustable and heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, rear door sunshades, dual-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation with live traffic, digital radio and an eight-speaker Bose sound system.

Standard safety kit includes seven airbags (including a front-centre unit), auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian, cyclist and intersection assistance, evasive steering assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, rear auto braking, a blind-spot camera, auto high beam, driver attention alert with leading vehicle departure alert, intelligent speed limit assist, lane keep assist with lane follow assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, a 360-degree parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, safe exist assist and rear occupant alert.

A range of colours will be available on the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, including ‘Atlas White’, ‘Galactic Grey’, ‘Phantom Black’, ‘Digital Teal-Green’, ‘Lucid Blue’ and in late 2021, ‘Gravity Gold’ (matte). Only the latter colour attracts a further $1,000. Depending on the exterior colour chosen, buyers can choose from black, grey and grey/teal interior colouring.

Like other Hyundai products, the Ioniq 5 has a five-year/unlimited km warranty with 12 months of roadside assistance that’s topped up to five years in total with each scheduled dealer service. There’s also an eight-year/160,000km warranty on the battery. Service pricing is yet to be announced.
