The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan has grown by reintroducing a diesel-powered version of its popular seven-seatĀ Tiguan AllspaceĀ SUV, set to come to Australia in October of this year. The return of the 140TDI is a welcome return for diesel power, which has always been popular with those who drive longer distances.

The Volkswagen Tiguan is in fact offered in two body styles. The regular Tiguan is a five-seat rival to the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5 and Kia Sportage. The Tiguan Allspace is 215mm longer and has a third row of seats, turning it into a seven-seater. The standard-length Tiguan remains petrol-only.

The new 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace 140TDI will be offered solely in Highline trim and will carry a recommended retail price of $54,690 plus on-road costs. That makes it $1500 more expensive than the petrol-powered Tiguan Allspace 162TSI Highline which shares an otherwise identical standard features list.

The Tiguan Allspace 140TDI variant was temporarily discontinued back in 2018 due to “WLTP-related (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure, or “real-world” fuel economy testing) production restrictions”, along with other cars from the VW Group.

All Tiguan Allspace models will continue to feature an impressive list of standard active safety tech such as lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, with Highline models adding blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

A power tailgate, tri-zone air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, adaptive suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, heated first- and second-row seats and Vienna leather upholstery all continue to feature on Highline models.

Options are the same as for the existing 162TSI Highline, including the $3000 R-Line package that adds to the Tiguan’s dynamic and sporty character. Other options include the $3000 Sound and Vision package, which includes a digital instrument cluster and a sound system, as well as the standalone option of a panoramic sunroof ($2000).

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is on sale from October.
