Australian pricing and specs for the 2021 Volkswagen Caddy have been announced ahead of a July 2021 release date. Priced from $34,990 plus on-road costs, the new generation Caddy is newly based on the company’s MQB platform with a range of two diesel engines available. Two body styles will also be available – short wheelbase and ‘Maxi’ long wheelbase – while the Caddy California camper will also be available, replacing the previous Caddy Beach.

Now sitting on the VW Group’s MQB platform – which also underpins cars such as the Golf and Tiguan – the 2021 Volkswagen Caddy now measures 4,500mm long (4,853mm as a Maxi), 1,614mm wide, 1,856mm high and with either a 2,755mm (SWB) or 2,970mm (Maxi) long wheelbase. The Caddy SWB can carry up to 724kg payload, and the Maxi 754kg.

All models in the 2021 Volkswagen Caddy range are fitted with a Euro 6-compliant 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine driving the front wheels. The Cargo and Cargo Maxi are available with 75kW/280Nm TDI280 (six-speed manual only) or 90kW/320Nm TDI320 (seven-speed dual-clutch auto only) – the passenger Maxi, Life Maxi and camper van California Maxi are available solely with the TDI320 tune.

Priced from $34,990 plus on-road costs, the 2021 Volkswagen Caddy Cargo SWB and Cargo Maxi are equipped with auto emergency braking (AEB), 16-inch steel wheels, auto lights with daytime running lights, an electric parking brake, air-conditioning, cruise control with a speed limiter, an 8.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED interior lighting, two USB-C ports, a leather steering wheel and a single passenger side cargo cabin sliding door – the Maxi has dual-sliding doors.

The Caddy Cargo SWB offers 3.1 cubic metres of load space and 1,797mm of load length – and can fit a Euro-sized pallet in the rear. The Caddy Cargo LWB raises this to 3.7 cubic metres of space, a 2,150mm maximum load length and can fit two pallets in the rear.

The Caddy Maxi ($45,490) then adds seven seats, fabric door trim panels, a luggage compartment cover, body coloured door handles, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist and an upgraded AEB system with both pedestrian and cyclist monitoring.

The Caddy Life Maxi ($49,990) then adds upgraded seat trim, a digital instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rear view mirror, 17-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails, two additional USB ports and adaptive cruise control.

Atop the local Caddy range for now is the California Maxi, which is priced at $54,990. The California features 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless start, tinted windows, a foldable bed, dimmable LED cabin lights, storage bags for the rear side windows, integrated fly screens, a folding table and two chairs.

Four solid pant finishes are available: ‘Candy White’, ‘Cherry Red’, ‘Pure Grey’ and ‘Bright Orange’. Metallic options (of which pricing is yet to be announced) include ‘Deep Black’, ‘Reflex Silver’, ‘Mohave Beige’, ‘Costa Azul’, ‘Golden Green’, ‘Fortana Red’, ‘Indium Grey’, ‘Copper Bronze’ and ‘Starlight Blue’.

Like with other Volkswagen products, the Caddy range comes with a five-year/unlimited km warranty and the option to pre-pay for servicing.
