Subaru Australia has confirmed that the 2021 Subaru Outback will be launched in Australia priced from $39,990 plus on-road costs – just $750 more than the current model. Offering three models and just a single drivetrain this time around, the 2021 Subaru Outback is similarly styled the outgoing model, but is based on a new platform, has an almost-new engine and a lot more technology than the previous generation car.

Blair Read, Subaru Australia General Manager, said: “Based on customer feedback, we’ve made a conscious decision to take Outback considerably up market, confirming its status as the flagship in the Subaru range.

“The aggressive rugged design, along with the suite of luxury features, technology, infotainment and safety inherent in every Outback will only add to its rock-solid reputation for value and whole-of-life costs.”

Now based on Subaru’s Global Platform that also underpins the Impreza, Forester and XV, the 2021 Subaru Outback has grown on the inside for more passenger space, while a new 11.6-inch touchscreen is standard across the range. This is the first time the Outback won’t be paired with a Liberty sedan sibling.

Subaru is yet to reveal full details of the drivetrains, but the 2021 Subaru Outback will – initially at least – come with a sole engine: a ’90 per cent new’ 138kW/245Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine matched with a CVT automatic with an eight-speed manual mode. Naturally being a Subaru, all-wheel drive is standard equipment, along with Subaru’s X-Mode off-road system.

All models in the 2021 Subaru Outback range are equipped with auto emergency braking that includes intersection assist and steering, lane departure warning with lane departure prevention, speed sign recognition with intelligent speed limiting, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic reverse braking and adaptive cruise control.

The mid-range Outback Sport adds heated front and outboard rear seats, water repellent sports cloth trim, front and side cameras, black exterior highlights, a hands-free tailgate, roof rails with green highlights, satellite navigation and dark finished wheels.

The top-spec Outback Touring then adds Nappa leather upholstery, silver roof rails, a sunroof, a heated steering wheel, a nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and a gloss finish for the wheels.

2021 Subaru Outback pricing (plus on-road costs):

2.5L Outback AWD: $39,990

2.5L Outback Sport AWD: $44,490

2.5L Outback Touring AWD: $47,790
