Ford has added yet another variant to its Ranger ute range: the 2021 Ford Ranger FX4 MAX. Set to make its debut locally late this year, the FX4 MAX adds a whole host of off-road features to the FX4 on which it’s based including off-road suspension with FOX shocks, 32-inch all-terrain tyres and an all-weather interior. Priced from $65,940 plus on-road costs, the FX4 MAX adds many features from the Ranger Raptor but with a $11,240 discount.
“The Ranger FX4 MAX channels the Ranger Raptor with its unique look and stance, while bringing customers both work and play capability with its locally engineered suspension, chassis tuning and unique FOX Shocks,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand.
“A factory-finished Ranger, FX4 MAX builds on the previous FX4 to deliver even greater off-road capability, yet adds its own distinctive style and genuine mechanical upgrades for a truly one-of-a-kind Ranger.”
Inspired by the popular Ranger Raptor, the Ranger FX4 MAX is spotted by its unique exterior styling including ‘F.O.R.D.’ lettering in the mesh front grille with a grey surround, as well as grey colouring for the skid plate, mirror caps, door handles, wheel arch mouldings and rear tray surrounds.
The FX4 MAX also features a full-length matte black tubular sports bar, in-tray lighting and body-mounted metal ‘hoop’ side steps to toughen the car’s look and emphasise the FX4’s off-road positioning.
Also featuring as standard are 17×8.0-inch alloy wheels finished in the same grey as the other off-road details, plus BF Goodrich All-Terrain K02 tyres, which are also fitted to the Ranger Raptor. Also featuring new 2.0-inch monotube Fox shock absorbers with tuned coil springs at the front, the FX4 MAX’s offset has increased by 42mm and its track by 26mm. Thanks to the all-terrain tyres and 2mm suspension lift, the FX4 MAX is 31mm higher than the XLT and its approach and departure angles have improved two degrees respectively as a result.
Further showing off the FX4 MAX’s off-road ability is its unique range of colours, which includes ‘Conquer Grey’ that was only previously available on the Raptor. An optional graphics pack is available for the bonnet, flanks and rear of the vehicle as well.
The 2021 Ford Ranger FX4 MAX’s cabin has also seen a few changes with the metal side steps leading to off-road ready all-weather floor mats and FX4 MAX-specific interior trimmings. The seats feature carbon-accents with suede inserts and FX4 MAX embroidery, while the pedals are the sports variety from the Raptor and the leather steering wheel shares its black inserts with the door trims and dashboard.
Finally, the 2021 Ford Ranger FX4 MAX also adds six upfitter auxiliary switches to give owners the ability to easily connect and operate auxiliary accessories such as light bars, winches and spot lights. To accomodate these, the FX4 MAX features a specific 250A alternator.
The only drivetrain available on the 2021 Ford Range FX4 MAX is the same 157kW/500Nm 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine with a 10-speed auto and full-time four-wheel drive. Unlike the Ranger Raptor and its reduced payload and towing capacities, the FX4 MAX can carry 98kg and tow 3,500kg.
Standard kit brought over from the FX4 on which it’s based includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen with inbuilt nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, auto emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist and a reversing camera.
Optionally available is an $800 Tech Pack (adaptive cruise control and automatic parking), $650 prestige paint and the $750 FX4 MAX decal set.
