Peugeot Australia has announced that new mild-hybrid variants of the 2008 small SUV, 308 hatchback and 408 mid-size coupe SUV will be available locally in the first quarter of 2025. Replacing current non-hybrid petrol engines, the Peugeot hybrid system combines a turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 48V mild-hybrid system for improved claimed fuel economy – the 308’s claimed consumption drops by 20.7 per cent to just 4.2L/100km, for example.
David Owen, General Manager Peugeot Australia said the result is a compact hatch that delivers great economy of a hybrid drivetrain without having to ever plug in.
“The new hybrid range marks yet another step in Peugeot Australia’s advanced approach to bringing a new era of hybrid products to Aussie roads.”
Combining a turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 48V mild-hybrid system, the new Peugeot hybrid system makes its debut in the 2008, 308 and 408 – and will also be available in the new 3008 SUV when it launches. Making 100kW of power and 230Nm of torque – with 15.6kW/51Nm available from the electric motor at certain points – the new drivetrain is more powerful than the previous non-hybrid drivetrains of the same size in the 2008 and 308, though the pre-update 408’s plug-in hybrid system was gutsier at 165kW.
As for fuel consumption, the 2008 is rated at 4.4L/100km, the 308 just 4.2L/100km and the larger 408 4.7L/100km. According to Peugeot, the battery automatically recharges while driving and means it also capable of operating more than 50 per cent of the time in 100 per cent zero-emission electric mode. This means that for all three new hybrid models, the claimed CO2 emissions sit around the 100g/km mark.
For the foreseeable future, the new 48V mild-hybrid system will be the only drivetrain available on the 2008, 308 and 408 ranges with other engines canned. That has seen pricing increase on the 2008 and 308, though the 408 is much better value than before without its plug-in hybrid drivetrain – its price is $10,000 less and has added equipment like a 360-degree camera, wireless charger, 10-speaker Focal sound system and the previously-optional (at $2,000) sunroof.
Peugeot hybrid range pricing (plus on-road costs):
- 2008 Allure: $42,490
- 2008 GT: $49,490
- 308 GT: $48,990
- 408 GT Premium: $57,990
The Peugeot mild-hybrid range will land in local Peugeot dealerships in the first quarter of 2025. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
