Citroen Australia has announced that it will cease trading locally, ending 101 years of continuous sales. Inchcape, the local importer of Citroen – and Peugeot, Subaru and soon to be Foton as well – has announced that local sales will cease from November 1st 2024 thanks to changing market conditions and consumer demand. Citroen sales peaked locally in 2007 at 3,803 units – so far this year, the brand has sold just 87 units, which is 35.6 per cent down on the same period last year.

David Owen, General Manager Citroen Australia, said: “Whilst we acknowledge and celebrate Citroen’s rich history in the Australian market, we must look to the future and consider the rapidly evolving, dynamic, and competitive nature of the industry and local market, alongside changing consumer demands.

“The decision for Citroen Australia to cease new vehicle sales was not made lightly; it was made after careful consideration of the current and future product available for our country, in the context of the local market and the preferences and requirements of Australian new vehicle buyers.

Presently, Citroen sells just models in Australia: the C3 light hatch, C4 coupe-hatchback-SUV, C5 Aircross mid-size SUV and lifted wagon C5 X. A plug-in hybrid version of the C5 X is due to arrive soon and will be the final vehicle that Citroen sells locally. Inchcape will still honour new-car warranties and service plans for recently sold Citroen vehicles, and the Peugeot brand will continue unchanged.

Citroen’s departure from our market marks the end of a 101-year run for the brand here. While its sister brand Peugeot was sold here before it landed in 1923, Citroen has actually been sold here consistently since then, whereas Peugeot left and returned.
