The Ford Focus has officially ended production after 27 years, closing the chapter on one of Ford’s most successful global models. Launched in 1998 as the successor to the Escort, the Focus quickly became a benchmark in the small car segment thanks to its sharp handling, modern design and affordability. How would I know? I still own our family’s third-generation Ford Focus from 2014 that’s been nothing but perfect (thank goodness it was the manual).

The final Focus rolled off the line at Ford’s Saarlouis plant in Germany, which has been the model’s primary production site since its introduction. The factory will now transition to component manufacturing, with no new vehicle programs confirmed for the site.

In Australia, the Focus arrived in 2002 to replace the long-serving Laser and enjoyed strong sales through the 2000s, peaking in 2013. However, demand for small cars declined as buyers shifted towards SUVs and utes, leading Ford Australia to discontinue the Focus in 2022, with the high-performance ST variant the last to be offered locally.

The Focus joins the Fiesta and Mondeo in Ford’s discontinued passenger car lineup, as the brand pivots towards electrification and SUVs. Ford’s European strategy now centres on electric models such as the Explorer EV and the upcoming Capri EV, though slower-than-expected demand has forced the company to cut costs and reduce jobs at its Cologne EV plant. We think this is such as shame as the Focus has always been such a capable car, and often all the car many would need, with it scoring really well during our reviews.

Globally, Ford’s market position has also shifted. Once the UK’s best-selling brand, it now sits fifth behind Volkswagen, BMW, Audi and Kia. In Australia, Ford’s lineup is dominated by the Ranger ute and Puma SUV, reflecting the broader industry trend away from traditional passenger cars.

While the Focus nameplate has been retired, speculation remains that Ford could revive it in the future as part of its electrification strategy. For now, the end of production marks the conclusion of a car that defined Ford’s small-car success for nearly three decades.

Farewell old friend and thank you for the miles of driving smiles. From a drive to the shops, or a road trip through a national park, the Focus always impressed and made the drive feel special. Ford certainly has some big shoes to fill.
