The covers have been taken off the 2022 Volkswagen T-Roc with a subtle mid-life update for the brand’s larger small SUV offering that sits above the T-Cross. Due to hit Australia in July 2022, the updated T-Roc will use the same engines as the current car but with lightly revised styling, a more modern and better quality interior and – finally – the 221kW T-Roc R

Stylistically, the 2022 Volkswagen T-Roc has not changed all that much. But look closer and there are detail changes to freshen its appearance. The headlights and bumpers have a new shape, while a new LED lighting strip connects the headlights as in the Mk8 Golf. The innards of the taillights have changed as well with new LED strips.

There are also a new range of alloy wheels, new colours and Matrix headlights are available for the first time under the brand’s ‘IQ’ safety equipment branding.

The interior of the 2022 Volkswagen T-Roc has seen more changes than the exterior. The outgoing car’s hard dashboard has been replaced by a soft touch stitched dashboard, while the company’s latest ‘MIB3’ infotainment systems now feature – and in sizes up to 9.2-inches. Previously sitting in the dashboard, the centre screen now sits atop it, while the climate control panel has been upgraded to the touch panel seen in other cars such as the Tiguan and Passat

A new steering wheel with haptic feedback touch controls has been borrowed from the Golf and Tiguan too, and the interior’s colours have been revised for a freshened look.

Volkswagen has added new safety kit to the ‘IQ’ umbrella, including Matrix adaptive high beam functionality for the headlights, predictive cruise control and improved AEB and lane assist systems.

For the first time in Australia, the 2022 Volkswagen T-Roc R will be offered. Featuring a 221kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, the T-Roc R won’t be quite as fast as the 235kW Golf R, but with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.9 seconds, nor is it in any way slow. The R features other sporty details such as 19-inch wheels, sports seats, blue interior highlights, a bodykit and spoiler and even an optional Akrapovic exhaust system.

The other engines in the Australian-spec T-Roc will remain unchanged. The entry-level front-wheel drive 110TSI Style is powered by a 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 140TSI Sport uses a 140kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and the brand’s ‘4Motion’ all-wheel drive system.

The T-Roc convertible seen in the press photographs for the car will not be making it Down Under.

Volkswagen Group Australia is yet to announce full details about the 2022 Volkswagen T-Roc but it is due for local sales in July 2022. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
