The power and fuel economy figures for the upcoming Mazda CX-90 have been revealed ahead of its August 2023 Australian release. Rated from just 5.4L/100km for the mild-hybrid turbo-diesel, the CX-90’s claimed fuel economy betters than of the smaller four-cylinder CX-8, yet it has two more cylinders and makes a lot more power and torque. The CX-90 will go on sale in Australia in August.

“Mazda has an established reputation for pushing the envelope and achieving complex engineering goals in pursuit of driving pleasure,” commented Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi.

“These two fully engaging, high-performance powerplants make considerable advancements, not only in power and performance, but also in overall efficiency, ensuring that the signature ‘Jinba Ittai’ Mazda driving experience delivers involvement and fun without any expense to frugality.”

Initially, two mild-hybrid engines will be available in the Mazda CX-90 in Australia, with a plug-in hybrid from the smaller CX-60 likely to be released later on. The ‘G50e’ petrol option is a 3.3-litre turbocharged inline-six engine, which features a 48V mild-hybrid system for greater performance and efficiency. It makes 254kW of power and 500Nm of torque, enough to take the CX-90 from 0 to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds – 1.7 seconds faster than the CX-9 and its turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The claimed fuel consumption for the six-cylinder petrol CX-90 is 8.2L/100km with CO2 emissions rated at 189g/km. According to Mazda, that’s a 10 per cent improvement on the CX-9 – which is smaller and has two less cylinders for 84kW/80Nm less output.

The second is a new 3.3-litre turbocharged inline-six diesel, again with 48V mild hybrid technology. It makes 187kW of power and 550Nm of torque for an 8.4 second 0-100km/h sprint time – 1.2 seconds faster than the CX-8 diesel – and yet, its claimed combined fuel consumption is just 5.4L/100km with CO2 emissions of 143g/km.

Both the petrol and diesel variants of the CX-90 will use a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and both will be fitted with all-wheel drive as standard.

Mazda Australia is yet to announce other details about the CX-90 range, with full details coming later in the year ahead of its August release. In the US, it will be offered with six, seven or eight seats depending on the trim level, while a full suite of active safety kit will also be standard across the range – we expect the latter to carry on to the Australian lineup as well.

The Mazda CX-90 will go on sale in Australia in August 2023, with local pricing and specifications to be announced before then. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
