Not long after its global reveal, the 2024 MG 3 has gone on sale in Australia with first deliveries due to commence soon. Priced from $23,990 plus on-road costs, the new MG 3 is now $5,000 more expensive at the bottom of the range but the new model features significantly more standard equipment – especially safety equipment – more technology and an optional 155kW hybrid drivetrain with claimed fuel consumption of just 4.3L/100km.
“The MG3 has been redesigned from the ground up and sets a new standard for hybrid and small petrol vehicles in Australia.”
“MG has brought together a brilliant mix of affordability, range and quality for Australian drivers in the all-new MG 3 range.” – Peter Ciao, MG Motor Aus CEO
Measuring 4,113mm long, 1,797mm wide, 1,502mm tall and riding on a 2,570mm long wheelbase, the 2024 MG 3 is 58mm longer, 68mm wider, 2mm shorter and features a 50mm-longer wheelbase than the previous model.
Its 293-litre boot expands to 983L with the rear seat folded.
Under the bonnet of the 2024 MG 3 is the choice of two drivetrains that use a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. The naturally aspirated option makes 81kW/142Nm, while the hybrid uses a 75kW/128Nm tune of the engine that’s then mated to a 100kW electric motor and a 1.8kWh battery for 155kW of combined power and a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 8.0 seconds.
Both drivetrains are front-wheel drive and while the petrol uses a CVT auto, the hybrid uses a three-speed (yep, that’s not a typo) automatic that’s mixed in with the electric motor. As for fuel consumption, the hybrid is rated at 4.3L/100km on the combined cycle (with claimed CO2 emissions of 100g/km) and the petrol at 6.0L/100km – the latter a 0.7L/100km improvement on the previous MG 3’s claim. The hybrid uses 95RON premium unleaded, while the petrol uses regular unleaded.
But while the 2024 MG 3 features more sophisticated drivetrains, its big improvement is in its now-standard suite of active safety equipment, none of which was available on the previous model. Features now standard across the range like auto emergency braking (AEB), lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and auto high beam weren’t available at all on the previous model, and a lot of which still aren’t available on the larger MG 5.
Other equipment on the entry-level MG 3 Excite includes an electronic handbrake, heated and auto-folding mirrors, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear air vents and four USB ports. The upper-spec Essence adds a 360-degree camera, LED headlights, MG’s ‘iSmart’ infotainment system with live services, digital radio and even automatic rain-sensing wipers.
