After confirming it at the launch of the new WRX range, Subaru has announced that the turbocharged 2023 Subaru Outback XT will launch locally before the end of the year. Using the same 2.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the WRX range and US-only Ascent SUV, the Outback XT adds some much-needed performance to Subaru’s lifted wagon range. It’s due on sale in December 2022, and pricing starts at $52,190 plus on-road costs for the base XT Sport.
Subaru Australia’s Managing Director, Blair Read, said: “We have heard our customer’s request for a turbocharged Outback loud and clear, so we are extremely pleased to add two all-new, turbocharged Subaru Outback variants to the MY23 Subaru Outback line-up.
“A more powerful turbocharged engine, coupled with the latest intuitive technology, impressive interior and of course the all-terrain capability of Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD, makes the Outback XT the perfect vehicle for any Australian road trip.”
Using the same 2.4-litre turbo petrol engine as the WRX, the 2023 Subaru Outback XT pumps out 183kW of power and 350Nm of torque – 45kW more power and 105Nm more torque than the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre regular Outback models. The peak torque of the XT hits 1,400rpm lower at 2,000rpm, and increases the car’s braked towing ability by 400kg to 2,400kg. Like the regular Outback, the XT is mated to a CVT automatic transmission with eight stepped ratios.
Fuel consumption for the Outback XT is rated at 9.0L/100km on a combined cycle, which is only 1.7L/100km more than the 2.5L petrol engine. The front and rear dampers and front suspension springs have been retuned for the turbo engine’s greater performance as well, while a copper-free material has been adopted for the brake pads especially for towing. The XT models in the Outback range can be externally identified by their twin tailpipes, XT badging and six-LED front fog lights.
The introduction of the 2023 Subaru Outback XT coincides with the 2023 model year updates to the greater Outback range, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB-C ports replacing USB-A ports, a redesigned touchscreen menu, expanded voice control functionality, redesigned steering wheel buttons and altered navigation functions.
