Ahead of a likely 2024 Australian release, the 2023 Polestar 3 electric SUV has been revealed to supplement the successful Polestar 2 that’s currently on sale. Debuting a new infotainment system, offering a range of up to 600km and kitted with equipment for future autonomous driving capability, the Polestar 3 will be priced from around $135,000 plus on-road costs in Australia.

“Polestar 3 is a powerful electric SUV that appeals to the senses with a distinct, Scandinavian design and excellent driving dynamics,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.

“It takes our manufacturing footprint to the next level, bringing Polestar production to the United States. We are proud and excited to expand our portfolio as we continue our rapid growth.”

Reportedly twinned with the upcoming Volvo EX90 large electric SUV, the 2023 Polestar 3 sits on the same ‘SPA2’ platform and will be aimed at buyers looking for a sporty-looking electric large SUV. Built in the company’s Chinese plant – as are a lot of modern Volvo products sold in Australia – the Polestar 3 will launch locally in 2024.

The 2023 Polestar 3 measures 4,900mm in length, 1,627mm in height and 2,120mm in width, which makes it 53mm shorter and 149mm lower, yet 112mm wider, than the current generation Volvo XC90. Its boot measures 484-litres with the seats up and 1,411L with them folded.

Under the bonnet of the 2023 Polestar 3 is an all-electric dual-motor drivetrain that makes a total of 360kW of power and 840Nm of torque, which draws its power from a 111kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack can be charged at up to 250kW, and a 10-80 per cent charge can take as little as 30 minutes.

Polestar says that the 3 has a range of 610km on the WLTP cycle, yet it can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.0 seconds despite its 2,600kg tare weight. An optional Performance Pack increases those outputs to 380kW and 910Nm, which drops the 0-100km/h time to 4.7 seconds and the range to 560km – it also adds 22-inch wheels, performance suspension and gold detailing inside and out.

Other features for the 2023 Polestar 3 include automatic all-LED lighting with optional 1.3 megapixel HD headlights, 21-inch wheels with air suspension, a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, a panoramic glass roof, tri-zone climate control, a 14.5-inch touchscreen running the latest Android Automotive infotainment software, a 9.0-inch digital driver’s display, electric and heated front seats and a hands-free tailgate.

Safety kit includes nine airbags (including two front centre units), auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keep assist with lane trace assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, rear auto braking, road sign recognition, a heads-up display, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, adaptive speed assist, a 360-degree parking camera and semi-autonomous parking.

It also has an optional advanced LiDAR system to “target and identify objects more precisely than ever before” and it “system improves convenience, collision avoidance, and cautionary assist functions.”

The Polestar 3 is due on sale in Australia likely in 2024, with full local pricing and specifications to be announced before then. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
