Ahead of its Australian arrival in early 2023, Mazda has announced local specifications and upgrades to the 2023 Mazda6 range, including a new 20th Anniversary Special Edition to celebrate the nameplate’s 20th year in Australia. Since its local launch in 2002, the Mazda6 has sold over 144,000 units and the new special edition celebrates its success with new trim and colour options.

Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi, said the special edition model is a tribute to the significance of the Mazda6 nameplate.

“For many years, Mazda6 has captivated driving enthusiasts with its clever mix of dynamics and style, to the point where it was our best-selling model behind the Mazda3 in the mid-2000s.

“Mazda6 retains a loyal following of fans, and the 20th Anniversary Edition is a special nod to those customers who share our passion for driving for the fun of it.”

Centre of the 2023 Mazda6 lineup is the new 20th Anniversary Special Edition, which is based on the top-spec Atenza and is available in either the new ‘Artisan Red’ or ‘Rhodium White’ colouring. It features a 20th anniversary badge on the front fender, a high-gloss silver grille and high-gloss silver 19-inch wheels.

Inside the 20th Anniversary Edition is a new tan upholstery colour, which features synthetic suede and Nappa leather trimmings. The front seat headrests are embossed with the 20th anniversary logo as well.

Being based on the Atenza, the only engine option for the Mazda6 20th Anniversary Special Edition is a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which has been upgraded for the 2023 model year. It now makes 173kW of power (up 3kW), while higher torque levels are made higher in the rev range – it now makes 8Nm more at 4,250rpm. The turbo’s six-speed automatic transmission has been refined as well, and offers a more refined shift feel, according to Mazda.

All models also benefit from updates to characteristics of the electric power-assisted steering to enhance response and give more tactile feedback at medium and high speeds, according to Mazda.

Mazda has also upgraded the 6’s equipment levels, with the GT and Atenza now fitted with traffic jam assist, while the Touring and above are now equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring and a wireless phone charger in the centre console. The Atenza is now available solely with black Nappa leather trim – the white and brown options have been culled.

Finally, the second-from-top GT SP model in the lineup now has a gloss black grille and roof rails, in addition to the already standard black wheels and mirror caps, for a sportier look.

The 2023 Mazda6 lineup, including the 20th Anniversary Special Edition, will land locally in early 2023, when pricing and full details will be announced. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
