The 2023 GWM Tank 300 has gone on sale in Australia ahead of imminent first deliveries, with local pricing starting from $55,990 drive away. Sitting above the Haval H6 in the GWM range, the Tank 300 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol hybrid drivetrain and a ladder-frame chassis and will compete with cars like the Jeep Wrangler, though it starts at a full $25,000 less.

Under the bonnet of the 2023 GWM Tank 300 is a 2.0-litre turbo petrol hybrid drivetrain, which is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system. The petrol engine makes 180kW of power and 380Nm of torque, with the electric motor adding 78kW and 268Nm – GWM doesn’t quote a combined figure, but Australian government documents indicate that it’s 225kW.

The Tank 300 can tow 2,500kg braked, while it has approach and departure angles of 33 and 34 degrees respectively. Its ground clearance is 224mm, while it measures 120mm shorter but 40mm wider and 65mm taller than the four-door Wrangler Unlimited.

Two models of the 2023 GWM Tank 300 will be available in Australia: the entry-level Lux ($55,990 drive away) and the top-spec Ultra ($60,990 drive away). Standard kit on the Lux includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED exterior lighting, a two-piece under-body guard, a sunroof, synthetic leather upholstery, a six-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a 12.3-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a nine-speaker sound system, seven-colour LED ambient lighting and heated and auto-folding mirrors.

Safety kit includes seven airbags (including a front centre unit), auto emergency braking (AEB) with front collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, rear cross-traffic alert with braking, a 360-degree camera and front and rear parking sensors.

Stepping up to the Ultra adds larger 18-inch wheels, Nappa leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, an eight-way electric driver’s seat with four-way lumbar adjustment, a heated leather steering wheel, wireless charging, an Infinity nine-speaker sound system, 64-colour LED ambient lighting, a 220V power outlet in the boot, a front differential lock, a three-piece under-body guard, automatic parking and an automatic reverse tracking function.

Five colours will be available for the 2023 GWM Tank 300: the no cost ‘Fossil Grey’, as well as the $595-extra ‘Lunar Red’, ‘Pearl White’, ‘Dusk Orange’ and ‘Crystal Black’.
