Volkswagen has revealed the mid-life facelift for the second-generation of Tiguan SUV. Due in Australia in around April 2021, the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan sports a new look, new technology and new plug-in eHybrid and sporty R variants – though both of those aren’t yet confirmed for local sales yet.

Most noticeable with the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is the new face, which has been reshaped to fit in more closely with the brand’s latest products – namely the T-Cross small SUV and Golf Mk8 hatchback. The headlights have been stretched out slightly and now feature Matrix ability to shield objects from their beam, and the grille made larger. Larger air intakes also feature to appear sportier.
A new range of alloy wheels ranging from 17- to 21-inches in size, while at the rear, new tailights feature with scrolling indicators and the Tiguan badge now sits in the middle for a more expensive look.
Inside the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is a refreshed look with new technology such as a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, and VW’s latest MIB3 infotainment systems in 8.0-inch and 9.2-inch sizes. There are new USB C ports in both the front and rear cabin, and interior trims and colours have been refreshed too.
The Tiguan’s climate control system now features touch sensitive inputs, as does the steering wheel, and the latest VW gear lever has been introduced as well. Finally, LED ambient lighting now features for a more expensive look. Australian models will also get a new 480W 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system that replaces the current Dynaudio unit.
Under the bonnet, the Tiguan is now available with a wider range of power trains including a 180kW 1.4-litre turbo plug-in eHybrid and a 235kW/420Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol Tiguan R. Having been spied for years, the Tiguan R is the latest in a recent expansion of the R lineup. Its power and torque figures are a huge 72kW/70Nm increase on the current top-spec Tiguan 162TSI.
Like all other Volkswagen R models, the Tiguan R puts its power to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch auto, and even features an Akrapovic exhaust system for greater aural pleasure.
Volkswagen Australia is yet to announce if the Tiguan PHEV and R are due for local sales, only confirming that the regular range will land here around April 2021. The seven-seat Tiguan Allspace is also due to be revealed soon, and the range of updates featured here are likely to be transferred across to the Allspace.
