After its global reveal not too long ago, Australian pricing and specifications for the 2022 Volkswagen Polo have been announced ahead of its arrival into local showrooms in May 2022. Now priced from $25,250 plus on-road costs, the new Polo is more sophisticated and better equipped than before, but it’s also had a big price increase to the tune of up to $6,000 for each model. New standard equipment includes alloy wheels, LED lighting and a new front centre airbag.

Brand Director of Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles Michal Szaniecki pointed to the Polo’s increased standard specification and the availability of safety, driver assistance technology from the Mk8 Golf.

“We’ve moved the Polo still further from the sticker driven rat race into its most premium form to date,” Mr Szaniecki said. “Already in the pre-updated form released in 2018, the sixth generation Polo asserted its technical superiority over perceived competitors due to its efficient turbo engines and MQB platform.

A mid-life facelift rather than an all-new car, the 2022 Volkswagen Polo’s range has been shuffled around. The previous Trendline and Comfortline naming structure has been shelved and the new entry-level Polo Life takes place of both models, with the Style and GTI sitting above it. Changes to the Polo include new styling with new headlights and tailights, new technology and new safety equipment – all models now have a front centre airbag, for example.

The drivetrains continue as before, though with a few changes to availability. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine is still available in 70kW/175Nm 70TSI and 85kW/200Nm 85TSI forms, but the 70TSI is now only available as a five-speed manual, and the 85TSI is disappointingly now only available as a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The GTI continues with its 147kW/320Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine mated solely to a six-speed DSG dual-clutch auto – not the 152kW/350Nm and seven-speed DSG tune offered in Europe.

Standard equipment on the entry-level Polo Life (70TSI manual: $25,250 plus on-road costs, 85TSI DSG auto: $28,250 plus on-road costs) includes 15-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, auto lights and wipers, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, digital radio, wireless phone charging, a digital driver’s cluster, air-conditioning, a leather steering wheel, a front centre armrest and cruise control.

Standard safety equipment includes seven airbags (including a new front centre unit), auto emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, an auto-dimming rear mirror, lane keep assist, front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera.

On the Life 85TSI DSG, buyers can select the $1,700 Vision and Tech Pack, which adds navigation, a larger digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone mirroring and adaptive cruise control with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Premium paint is $600.

The Polo Style ($31,250 plus on-road costs) then adds larger 16-inch wheels, Matrix LED headlights, ‘premium’ LED tailights with scrolling indicators, an illuminated grille, front fog lights, a larger 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, automatic parking and ‘comfort sports’ front seats.

Buyers of the Polo Style can choose the $1,900 Sound and Tech Pack, which adds navigation, voice control, wireless smartphone mirroring, keyless entry and start and a 300W Beats sound system. A $1,500 sunroof can also be chosen.

The sporty Polo GTI now starts at $38,750 plus on-road costs and adds – aside from the larger engine and sports details – an alarm, keyless entry and start, 18-inch wheels, adaptive suspension, selectable driving modes, satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sports seats and a sports steering wheel with paddle shifters.

Polo GTI buyers can also select a Sound and Tech Pack, but it’s priced at a lesser $1,500 because most of the Style’s equipment is standard on the GTI. On the GTI, the pack adds a larger 9.2-inch infotainment system and a 300W Beats sound system. Premium paint on the GTI is $300.
