Ahead of an Australian arrival around half way through 2024, the local model range for the 2024 Lexus GX550 has been announced. To be positioned as the luxury cousin to the new Toyota LandCruiser Prado, the GX will be offered in three models – including an off-road themed Overtrail model that will only be available in five-seat form – with a single drivetrain for now: a 260kW/650Nm 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Lexus Australia Chief Executive John Pappas said the all-new GX is perfect for adventure-focused Lexus customers wanting a luxurious and tough SUV that can take the entire family deep into the outdoors.

“Lexus is dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of our customers, and the GX provides a seven-seat solution for families while offering fantastic turbocharged off-road performance,” Mr Pappas said.

“We are also delighted to offer the unique Overtrail grade for those wanting rugged off-road capability as the number one priority.”

While Australian pricing is yet to be announced, Lexus staff have reportedly told local media that it will be in the “six-figure” range, pointing to a starting price north of $100,000 plus on-road costs – or around $20,000 more expensive than the current top-spec Prado Kakadu (which will also increase in price. Locally, three models will be offered: the entry-level Luxury and both the top-spec Sports Luxury and off-road themed Overtrail sitting above it.

Under the bonnet of the 2024 Lexus GX550 range in Australia will be one drivetrain initially: a 260kW (between 4,800rpm – 5,200rpm)/650Nm (from 2,000rpm to 3,600rpm) twin-turbocharged petrol V6 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel drive system. While local fuel consumption figures are yet to be announced, Lexus Australia has confirmed that the Luxury and Overtrail will be able to tow a 3,500kg braked trailer (3,130kg for the Sports Luxury).
