A new higher-performance variant of the BMW X1 range, the 2024 BMW X1 M35i, has been revealed ahead of a late 2023 Australian release. Adding a whole host of M-tuned parts like an uprated engine and suspension, the X1 M35i is the first time an M badge has been applied to the X1 small SUV globally and it will sit on the same level as cars like the M240i coupe and M135i hot hatch – below fully fledged M cars like the M3 but above regular X1 models.

According to the brand, the “performance model will take its place as the flagship variant in the X1 line-up and combine a high level of driving pleasure – for which M models are renowned – with breakthrough digital features, segment leading driver assistance systems, contemporary design and a high level of specification.”

At the centre of the 2024 BMW X1 M35i is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 233kW of power and 400Nm of torque. It’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and sends its power to all four wheels. The claimed 0-100km/h sprint time is 5.4 seconds, while it hits an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.

Elsewhere in the M transformation is a mechanical limited-slip differential on the front axle, 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive M suspension that’s 15mm lower than regular X1 models, speed-sensitive steering, quad tailpipes with a dual-mode sports exhaust and even an ‘M Boost Mode’ where holding the left steering wheel paddle for at least one second switches the car’s parameters to the sportiest settings.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an M-badged car without changes to the design and exterior changes include larger air intakes, more aerodynamic black-coloured mirror caps, side skirts, a larger rear spoiler and a new rear bumper incorporating the quad exhaust pipes. The interior adds aluminium trim inlays, M sports seats in leather trim, a black headliner and unique displays in the screens.

The 2024 BMW X1 M35i will also be one of the first BMWs to use the company’s new iDrive 9 software, which offers a newly designed home screen and ‘QuickSelect’ functionality. This brings an improved menu structure that takes its cues from consumer electronics devices. According to BMW, by showing the right information in the right place, the new BMW iDrive enhances the car’s focused, assured driving experience.

The 2024 BMW X1 M35i is due on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2023, with local pricing to be confirmed before then. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
