Ahead of its launch in the coming months, Australian pricing and specifications have been released for the 2022 Subaru WRX. Priced from $44,990 plus on-road costs (from around $50,000 drive away, depending on location), the new WRX range will be offered in three main models and for the first time in more than two generations of the nameplate, both sedan and wagon body styles – the latter replaces the Levorg, which is branded WRX Sportswagon only for Australia.

Subaru Australia Managing Director, Blair Read, said: “The WRX is iconic and legendary, for generations people have desired this car and new generation WRX takes its existing status to an entirely new level. Building on its reputation as an exhilarating rally-rich car, the Subaru engineers have delivered a new WRX with aggressive styling, more power, new technology, and handles just as the driver intended.

“WRX has been an icon for 30 years and we are confident the new generation WRX Sedan and Sportswagon will continue to exceed Subaru enthusiast’s expectations.”

As previously reported, the 2022 Subaru WRX range uses a new 202kW/350Nm 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Boxer engine that’s mated to either a six-speed manual transmission, or a new ‘Subaru Performance Transmission’, which is a CVT automatic with eight stepped ratios. Performance figures are yet to be released, but Subaru claims combined fuel consumption of 9.9L/100km for the manual, 8.5L/100km for the automatic.

Dimensionally, the 2022 Subaru WRX sedan measures 4,670mm long (wagon: 4,755mm), 1,825mm wide (1,795mm), 1,465mm tall (1,500mm) and it has a 2,675mm long wheelbase (2,670mm). The sedan’s boot measures 414-litres, while the wagon’s is slightly larger at 492L (1,430L with the seats folded).

Standard equipment on the 2022 Subaru WRX includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting with LED front fog lights, auto lights and wipers, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, electric-folding mirrors, an 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, digital radio, a six-speaker sound system, cruise control, cloth upholstery and rear privacy glass. The wagon also adds ambient interior lighting and one-touch folding rear seats with reclining.

Safety equipment includes eight airbags (including a front centre unit), blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist, a reversing camera and tyre pressure monitoring. Disappointingly, the manual WRX is not available with features like auto emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control or lane keep assist because they aren’t engineered for manual transmissions and this means that the manual and automatic variants will likely carry different safety ratings.

Those features are reserved for all automatic variants, which also add auto high beam, automatic reverse braking, lane trace assist, traffic sign recognition, an electric parking brake with auto hold and selectable driving modes.

The mid-spec WRX RS sedan (from $50,490 plus on-road costs)/GT wagon (from $55,490) then adds suede upholstery, a 10-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, eight-way electrically adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats, heated mirrors with puddle lamps, satellite navigation, front and side cameras, driver attention monitoring with facial recognition, auto high beam for the manual, ambient interior lighting for the sedan, two rear USB ports, an auto-dimming rear mirrors and a CD player.

The WRX GT wagon changes the sedan’s suede upholstery for leather and adds a hands-free tailgate.

Available colours for the 2022 Subaru WRX range include ‘Ceramic White’, ‘Ice Silver’, ‘Solar Orange’, ‘Ignition Red’, ‘WR Blue’, ‘Sapphire Blue’, ‘Magnetite Grey’ and ‘Crystal Black’.
