Tradies rejoice! Ford Australia has announced pricing and specifications for the upcoming Ranger PHEV, set to launch in mid-2025. The 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV (plug-in hybrid) variant will be available in four trims—XLT, Sport, Wildtrak, and a limited-edition Stormtrak—with prices starting at $71,990 (including GST). The Ranger PHEV combines a 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, offering a balance of power and efficiency.
The Ranger lineup remains otherwise the same, with a total of 25 available variants in Australia.
With PHEV utes such as the BYD Shark 6, popping up almost every other month, Ford certainly has high hopes for its electrified Ranger and will rely on it to retain the Ranger’s position as Australia’s best selling vehicle.
“The addition of PHEV to the Ranger lineup marks the first time in history that Australia’s best-selling nameplate has been offered with an electrified plug-in hybrid option, with the backing of an extensive nationwide dealer network. We can’t wait for our customers to get behind the wheel,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia.
What’s under the bonnet
The Ranger PHEV features a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine paired with a 75kW electric motor and an 11.8kWh battery. The combined system delivers 207kW of power and 697Nm of torque, making it the most powerful Ranger variant to date. Fuel economy is rated at 2.7L/100km (NEDC), with CO2 emissions of 66g/km.
As always, with PHEVs take that consumption figure with a (very large) grain of salt as it will largely be dependent on the Ranger PHEVs state of charge and how it’s being driven. Running purely on EV power, the Ranger PHEV will use no fuel. Having said that, Ford remains coy in not providing any EV-only driving range for the Ranger. Expect a figure of around 50km. Running on an empty battery, will likely see the Ranger miss its 2.7L/100km target, with figures likely to be multiples of the claimed fuel usage amount.
The plug-in hybrid system offers four EV drive modes:
EV Charge: Uses the petrol engine to recharge the battery while driving.
Auto EV: Balances power and efficiency automatically.
EV Now: Operates solely on electric power.
EV Later: Preserves battery charge for later use.
The 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV uses a 10-speed transmission sandwiched between the engine and transmission with regenerative braking, which captures energy during deceleration to recharge the battery.
The full-time 4WD system matches the one found in the 3.0L V6 Rangers and utilises an electronically controlled on-demand 2-speed transfer case, with 2H, 4A, 4H, and 4L available to drivers. It also features a locking rear differential to help when the going gets rough.
All Ranger PHEV variants come standard with a 6.9kW “Pro Power Onboard” system, featuring a 2.3kW socket in the cabin and two 3.45kW sockets in the tray. This system allows the vehicle to power tools, camping equipment, or even a caravan directly from its battery. If the battery depletes, the petrol engine can maintain power output.
Towing and Payload
The Ranger PHEV retains the 3,500kg braked towing capacity found in other Ranger models. Payload figures vary by trim, with the XLT offering up to 973kg—180kg more than any other plug-in hybrid dual-cab ute in Australia, including the BYD Shark 6. The loadbox design allows for two European-sized pallets, with a tray length exceeding 1,600mm.
Pricing and Variants
The Ranger PHEV line-up starts at $71,990 for the XLT and tops out at $86,990 for the Stormtrak. Key features across the range include full-time 4WD, regenerative braking, and the ability for the Ranger to provide vehicle to load power. Tradies will now be able to run their tools from the Ranger directly, without feat of the onboard 12-volt battery going flat. Higher trims add premium features like matrix LED headlights, leather-accented seats, and advanced driver-assistance systems.
