Chinese brand GAC has officially detailed the local specification of its AION V, the brand’s first model for Australia. The all-electric medium SUV will be offered in Premium and Luxury trims, both underpinned by the company’s proprietary 400V EV architecture and a 75.26kWh LFP battery. On the WLTP cycle, the AION V claims a 510km driving range, while DC fast charging from 30 to 80 per cent can be completed in just 16 minutes using a 180kW charger.
Power comes from a 150kW/210Nm front-mounted motor, with drive sent to the front wheels. Top speed is rated at 160km/h, while efficiency is aided by a standard heat pump system. Safety is a key focus, with GAC highlighting its Magazine Battery 2.0 technology, designed for enhanced fire resistance and durability under extreme conditions.

Inside, the AION V aims to balance practicality with comfort. A 14.6-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto dominates the minimalist cabin, while a panoramic sunroof and acoustic glass help create a quiet, airy environment. Rear passengers benefit from generous legroom – up to 1.1 metres – and reclining second-row seats. With the rear seats folded, boot space expands to 978 litres, enough to accommodate items like a 2m surfboard.

The Luxury trim adds standout features, including eight-point massage seats, genuine leather upholstery, and a 6.6-litre refrigerated compartment hidden in the centre armrest. The fridge can cool, freeze, or even warm items, making it a practical addition for Australian summers. Both trims include heated and ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, and a suite of driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure prevention, blind-spot detection, and a 360-degree camera.

Externally, the AION V adopts a bold design language, with “dragon claw” LED lighting, pronounced wheel arches, and a muscular stance. Standard 19-inch alloy wheels and roof rails add to its SUV credentials.
Speaking on the announcement, Cheney Liang, Deputy General Manager of GAC Australia, said the AION V represents “the very best of modern electric powertrain technology, combining this with the safety, comfort and everyday practicality that truly make a difference in Australian life.”
Pricing and warranty details will be confirmed closer to the AION V’s local launch in November. With its combination of long range, rapid charging, and family-friendly practicality, the AION V enters a competitive segment that includes the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and BYD Atto 3 – but aims to stand out with its unique blend of technology and features.
