More than a few years after its global debut, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross is finally due to go on sale in Australia in October 2022. Priced from $33,000 plus on-road costs, the Corolla Cross will sit above the C-HR but below the RAV4 in the local Toyota lineup and will use – as the name suggests – the same TNGA platform and 2.0-litre petrol engine as the regular Corolla range, plus a new 2.0-litre hybrid drivetrain that’s not been offered yet in Australia.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the Corolla Cross would appeal to a broad range of customers.

“Bringing the Corolla Cross to market shows Toyota’s commitment to offering customers the vehicle that best suits their lifestyle,” Mr Hanley said.

“With ample space for a variety of customers and lifestyles, new safety and connected features and fuel-efficient powertrains, the Corolla Cross gives customers what they want out of a small SUV.”

While Toyota is yet to reveal full details like engine outputs, we do know what models will be offered and how much they will cost. Like the regular Corolla range, three Corolla Cross models will be offered: the base GX (priced from $33,000 plus on-road costs), mid-spec GXL (from $36,750 +ORC) and top-spec Atmos (from $43,550 +ORC). Two engines will be offered: a 2.0-litre petrol engine that makes 125kW of power and 200Nm in the Corolla, as well as a 2.0-litre hybrid, which makes 146kW in European spec.

Standard equipment on the entry-level 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross GX includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED lighting, heated/auto-folding mirrors, single-zone climate control, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, digital radio, a six-speaker sound system, fabric upholstery and keyless entry and start.

Safety kit includes eight airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, lane trace assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, auto high beam and a reversing camera.

The mid-spec GXL adds ‘high grade’ LED lighting, front fog lights, rear privacy glass, roof rails, leather and fabric upholstery, dual-zone climate control, a larger 10.5-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, rear USB-C charging ports, low-speed automatic front and rear braking and a 360-degree camera.

Finally, the top-spec Atmos adds larger 18-inch wheels, a panoramic roof, an electric tailgate with kick-to-open functionality, leather upholstery with heated front seats, 8-way electric adjustment for the drive’s seat, a heated steering wheel, a wireless phone charger, auto wipers and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. The Atmos hybrid further adds semi-autonomous parking and ‘see-through’ ability for the 360-degree parking camera.
