More than 110,000 new cars found themselves a home in June 2020, the best monthly result since June last year. You can thank the easing of COVID-19 lockdowns and the Federal Government’s $150,000 instant asset tax write-off, which saw businesses splurge on new vehicles.

Official figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries showed that a total of 110,234 cars were sold in June 2020, a decline of only 6.4 per cent compared to the same month last year. This is in contrast to the 35.3 per cent and 48.5 per cent declines in new car sales in May and April respectively on 2019.

Premium car makers such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Lexus posted massive sales figures, whilst many mainstream dealers sold out of utes and vans as tradies spent lavishly. Sales of utes and vans surged by 8.6 per cent, and SUVs also outpaced the market (down by only 2.9 per cent versus the overall market decline of 6.4 per cent).

The Toyota HiLux ute remains our top selling vehicle and recorded an all-time monthly sales record 6537 deliveries.

Four-wheel-drives and other recreational vehicles such as the Toyota Land-cruiser and Prado featured prominently amongst the best sellers as our closed borders force more Australians to holiday domestically.

As nobody could have foreseen that June 2020 was going to be a stellar month, expect to see a slowdown as we go into the rest of the year. Supply constraints are due to hit all manufacturers, as dealerships have ordered fewer cars in anticipation of lower sales towards the tail end of 2020.
