The 2022 Honda Civic has been previewed by a prototype concept car in the US ahead of its 2022 Australian release. Due to sit on a new platform with a new range of technology, potentially new engines and even a hybrid option, the 2022 Civic will also usher in a new era of design for Honda.
“Civic has always exceeded expectations, and the all-new Civic will continue that legacy of setting the standard for compact cars with human-centred design, outstanding dynamics, style, safety performance and driver enjoyment,” said Dave Gardner, executive vice president of National Operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
Showing more of the 2022 Honda Civic’s styling than its interior or powertrains, the Civic prototype moves the car’s styling in a new direction. Toned down and more refined compared with the current generation model, the 2022 Honda Civic has clearly grown in length to compare with rivals such as the Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla.
The interior was previewed with a sketch, and we can see that the Honda e electric car has influenced the Civic’s interior with its simplicity and use of screens. The Civic’s dials will be fully digital for the first time and the centre screen will grow to around 9.0-inches in size. The dashboard is dominated by the horizontal air vent and the centre console has become less space age in comparison with the current model.
Honda is yet to announce details about the Civic’s drivetrains, though the current model is available with 104kW/174Nm 1.8-litre, 127kW/220Nm 1.5-litre turbo and in the Type R (which will continue to the next generation model), 228kW 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines. Considering that the new generation Honda Jazz is solely available as a hybrid in Europe, it’s likely the new Civic will also gain a hybrid drivetrain.
The 2020 Honda Civic will go on sale in Australia late next year or in 2022 with local pricing and specs to be announced before then.
